Details This piece was originally written, as the title would suggest, to musically depict an argument. The piece starts with both instruments in the middle of a conversation, and as this conversation slowly builds in tension, we start to see a clash in the harmony and the overall style of both voices. The voices fight against each other, with the piano intentionally overshadowing the clarinet until they finally resolve and come to a consensus. Both parts are not equal - the clarinet part is intentionally much easier than the piano accompaniment, as at the time of writing this (2019) I had just started to learn the clarinet and was experimenting with the instrument directly.
